Early entrance to kindergarten is a referral process used to evaluate students for enrollment into kindergarten when they do not meet the age requirement set by the District. To be sure children are ready for the demands of school, the Piqua City School District considers a child eligible for entry into kindergarten when the child is five (5) years old on or before August 1st to enroll in kindergarten. The Board of Education may admit a younger child to kindergarten if the child satisfies the Board's early entrance criteria.
Parents who reside within the Piqua City School District who have children who will become five (5) years of age between August 2nd and before January 1st may request testing for early entrance to Kindergarten.
Early entrance should be viewed as a means of meeting your child's needs. Developmental readiness is the key to determining whether or not early entry is appropriate. Even though a child may have a great deal of ability, he or she may not be ready for kindergarten. Social maturity, personal and motor development are important factors for a child's success in school.
Early entrance is designed for the exceptional child who is both academically ready and developmentally mature when compared to other children his or her age.
