The Ohio Department of Education has a new webpage for Families of Students with Disabilities.

The page features information to help families better understand the special education process. It includes the newly created Evaluation Roadmap to show families what to expect if they feel their children may need additional supports or Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). The Evaluation Roadmap shares key timelines, links to documents that schools must use and supporting information at each step for a better understanding of what parents can expect. The Evaluation Roadmap is downloadable and available in multiple languages.

Also featured on the Families of Students with Disabilities page are direct links to agencies in Ohio that offer one-on-one assistance to families of students with disabilities. Resources for families related to getting involved with their children’s learning, early childhood and preschool, and literacy also are on the page.

The Special Education Department

The Special Education Department is committed to providing a comprehensive and seamless continuum of quality services for students with disabilities that facilitates the students' academic and social/emotional growth.

Who is eligible for special education services?

Special education services are provided to students with disabilities as defined by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEIA). Piqua City Schools ensures that a free appropriate public education (FAPE) is made available to our community’s children with disabilities from age three through to adulthood ending at their twenty-second birthday.

“Child with a disability” means a child evaluated in accordance with rule 3301-51-06 of the Administrative Code as having one of the following 13 categories and who, by reason thereof, requires special education and related services.

What services are available and how are services determined?

These services include integrated preschool programs for children with identified special needs ages 3-5 yrs.; general education teachers working with Intervention Specialists to meet the needs of students kindergarten through grade 12; individual/small group instruction; resource rooms and special classes. Services are based on the individual needs of the student as documented in the Individualized Education Program (IEP).

Other special education related services, such as occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech/language therapy, etc. are available based on a student's IEP.

Students who require special programs that are not provided by the Piqua City Schools may attend regional programs such as Miami County Educational Services Center Cooperative Learning Center or the Montgomery County Learning Centers, for example.

Notice from the Special Education Department

The Piqua City School District joins districts across Ohio in ongoing efforts to identify, locate and evaluate children from birth to 21 years of age who may have disabilities. Public school districts are responsible for providing a “free and appropriate” public education to any child living in the district – including children with disabilities, regardless of the nature or extent of the disability.
