Piqua City Schools News Article

Press Release June 24, 2016

Longtime Piqua City School Superintendent Rick Hanes announced today that he is stepping aside
and has accepted a position with Edison State Community College as Vice President for Business
and Community Partnerships. He begins on August 1, 2016.

“I am very excited about this career and life change, it is an honor to have the opportunity to serve at
Edison ” noted Hanes. “The best part is that I will remain in Piqua where I will continue to cheer on
my youngest child within the schools and community that I love.”

Hanes will also work to finish his doctorate degree at Miami University.

Hanes will be missed, according to Frank Patrizio, board president. “Mr. Hanes guided the schools
through difficult financial times, provided innovative changes to academia throughout the district
and lead the effort to build three new elementary schools within the district. The board is
appreciative of the success and accomplishments of the school district under Rick’s guidance and
wish him great success with his new position at Edison State Community College.”

When Hanes took the helm in 2007, the district was facing a serious fiscal crisis. Hanes, with
tremendous expertise in fiscal matters, successfully scaled back the operating budget. All the while,
he led the district to its highest levels of improvement on the district’s report card and the highest
levels of community satisfaction in recent memory. Hanes also led the community charge which
provided three new elementary buildings for the district.

“I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to all the students, staff members, parents, board members,
community members and business leaders who I have been blessed to work with over the years,”
expressed Hanes. “Piqua City Schools is a great district supported by wonderful people.”

As for immediate next steps Hanes’ resignation will appear on the June 28 board agenda. At that
time, the board is expected to begin the search process.

“It has been such a blessing and honor to serve here in Piqua and leaving is bittersweet but I know
that this is the next right step for me and it is just time,” stated Hanes. “I will always cheer for Piqua
and I thank the community for this tremendous honor of serving the children of our district.”
