Piqua City School District Introduces REACH This Fall
One-to-One literacy initiative for all Kindergarteners and First Graders begins at Piqua City Schools, Milton-Union Exempted Village Schools and Franklin Monroe Schools

Piqua,OH

REACH (Reading Expands All Children’s Horizons) a new literacy initiative designed to bolster reading achievement by engaging parents in at-home learning will be introduced in the Piqua City School District during the 2015-2016 school year. Using laptops and educational media, REACH will extend learning for Kindergarten and first grade students beyond the traditional school day by increasing parental engagement with reading.

REACH educational media includes a collection of 32 interactive, self-paced reading lessons. The Kindergarten and first grade lessons are available online through PBS LearningMedia, the nation’s largest digital media service for educators. REACH lessons will be accessed from any location by parents and students using laptop devices provided by the Piqua City School District. The reading lessons, combining interactive activities, videos and games, are aligned to national standards and best classroom learning practices. Each lesson is an extension of what students are learning in school. More information about REACH is available online at www.REACH1to1Reading.org.

Piqua City Schools, Milton-Union Exempted Village Schools and Franklin Monroe Schools partnered with ThinkTV, public television in the Miami Valley, to produce a year-long collection of reading lessons for each grade level. REACH is a five-year (2015-2020) initiative supported by the Ohio Department of Education’s Straight A Fund. Student achievement will be evaluated at the end of each academic year. Wright State University Center for Evaluation Research will conduct the assessment.
