Nominated by her peers, Mary has been a consistent advocate for students and their families. In their nominations, fellow staff members had the following comments: “Mary is a caring educator who treats her colleagues and students with the highest degree of professionalism, respect and kindness. She puts aside her personal goals and works well with others for the common goal. She has a heart not only for the students in her classroom, but for all the students in the building. Students love Mrs. Burkhardt and are continually challenged by her teaching. Mary is a kind, creative and sincere educator, and a true leader who is passionate about her profession. She is helpful and supportive to students and families as well as her coworkers. Mary inspires others to be better educators……. and she is always smiling.” In her finalist application, Mrs. Burkhardt shared the following: “Each year, I strive to provide my students with a friendly, supportive, classroom environment where they can produce and achieve quality work. In this supportive environment, the students are asked to do useful work, to do the best they can, to evaluate their own work and strive to improve it, feel good about their achievements, and to learn how to solve many of their own problems. As a Kindergarten teacher, my teaching goal has been to lay a quality educational foundation filled with knowledge and strategies that my students can use and apply in their future, as well as in their daily lives.”
Mary began working for the Piqua City School District in August of 1997 as a Kindergarten teacher at South Street Elementary. She has been at the Nicklin Learning Center since August of 1999.
