“December is always kind of a quiet month,” Corbin Board of Education Chair Kim Croley said in regards to Thursday’s Corbin Board of Education meeting.

However, the board did approve the renaming of the Corbin Area Technology Center, also known as the vocational school. R.L. Owens Building will now be the official name for the structure located in the back of Corbin High School.

“The building is named after R.L. Owens, of Corbin,” Croley said. “Owens was instrumental in making sure that the Corbin Independent School System received that school.”

Croley said most of the time it is the county school systems which receives those schools.

Owens has always supported the school both monetarily and by the curriculum, according to Croley.

The board received permission from Frankfort to officially rename the building.

“We’re really excited about giving it a new name because there has been a huge confusion between the name of the vocational school and The Corbin Center,” Croley said.

The building houses all workforce development classes. Students can choose between premed, criminal justice and drafting classes, to name a few. Croley said there are currently 167 students who attend bio-med classes and 150 in law enforcement classes.

“The students are able to graduate and be career ready after school,” Croley said. “These classes are a huge stepping stone. The vocational classes are just a bonus to the students going on to a four-year school.”
