As part of the continuing partnership between the Piqua City Schools and the Piqua Police Department, an opportunity has been recognized to provide critical police training in a safe and unique environment.

High Street School, 1249 West High Street, Piqua, is scheduled for demolition soon. Through ongoing conversations, Piqua City Schools is aware (and supportive) of the Piqua Police Department’s commitment to realistic training scenarios for their officers. The schools have identified a limited window of opportunity and are providing access to High Street School for the police department’s training purposes.

Recent changes to reactions to active threats inside school buildings include different tactics for the first responding officers. Police have already learned several new tactics and exercised them in simulated environments. Police instructors are looking forward to providing the officers the experience of applying the new tactics in an actual school building. Prior to the demolition, tactics can be practiced that are not practical in buildings currently in use.

The police department is grateful for a relationship with its local public school district that includes a willingness to provide this opportunity. The experience and proficiency gained by police officers the next few weeks will make our schools and community safer.

Please do not be alarmed to see police activity around High Street School over the next few weeks.
